3 Lashker militants gunned down in Shopian encounter

Security forces gunned down three local Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants in an encounter that erupted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday, officials said.

They said the gun battle erupted at Nagbal during a cordon and a search operation in the area following an input about the presence of militants.

“As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire, triggering a gunfight during which two LeT militants were killed in the initial contact,” a security official said.

Both the killed militants were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeT, they said.

One more militants was killed later on during the gunfight taking the toll to three, police said.

“The three local militants have been identified as Danish Khursheed Bhat, Tanveer Wani and Towseef Bhat who were allegedly involved in several terror crime cases”, a senior police officer said.

“The 3 killed terrorists have been identified as local terrorists of LeT namely Danish Khursheed Bhat, Tanveer Wani & Towseef Bhat. They were involved in several terror crime cases. Terrorist Danish was involved in recruitment of youth into terror ranks in Shopian”, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said in a tweet.

Arms and ammunition were also recovered from the site of the encounter, police said.
