Islamabad, April 16 (UNI) Amid ruckus in Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly, PML-N leader Hamza Shahbaz was on Saturday elected as the Chief Minister.
Shahbaz won the election with 197 votes while his rival Pervaiz Elahi could get only one vote and the members of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf had boycotted the polls.
Ahead of the voting, three PTI members of the Punjab Assembly were arrested for attacking Deputy Speaker Dost Mohammad Mazari as the party boycotted the session to elect the new chief minister, Geo News reported.
The session, which was scheduled to start at 11:30 am (local time), was delayed due to violence between PTI and PML-Q leaders.
According to Geo News, the lawmakers of the ruling party had thrown “lotas” at Mazari first, attacked him and pulled his hair despite the presence of security guards.
Following this, the deputy speaker left the assembly.
Amid the ruckus, PML-Q leader Pervaiz Elahi got injured.
He leader claimed that the violence was pre-planned and said, “They have rewarded me well in return for my goodness. Has this ever happened to any speaker before.”
He also alleged that the courts are not for the poor and he will ask for justice from God.
Referring to the Supreme Court remaining open at midnight for election of country’s PM, he said that sou motu notice is taken when influential people are involved, Geo TV reported.
Meanwhile, PPP chaiman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has condemned the attack on Deputy Speaker and said it was “not only an attack on the Punjab assembly, it’s an attack on our courts who had ruled he conduct elections today”.
