Former chief minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday alleged that BJP does not have guts to face voters of J&K.

The National Conference Vice President Omar was reacting to reports that hinted that elections may not be held this year in J&K after the Election Commission of India revised the schedule of special summary revision of electoral rolls. The last date is now November 25, earlier it was October.

“Complete dilution of Art 370, bifurcation & downgrading of J&K state, gerrymandering of constituencies through a tame delimitation commission, curtailing movement & activities of parties like @JKNC_ by revoking security & STILL the BJP doesn’t have the guts to face voters of J&K,” Omar tweeted.

Earlier his party expressed disappointment over the further delay in Assembly elections in J&K, saying the decision will lengthen the suffering of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement, party State spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said the decision has dispirited the political parties and the people of J&K.

“The decision is bereft of any logic. Delay in the publication of final electoral roll by a month obliquely means that elections are faraway. The decision has come as a set back to the people particularly, who have been pushed to margins due to lingering Bureaucratic rule. It is a big disappointment for the furtherance of Democratic voices in the region as well,” he said.

“Knowing that the BJP has diminished its credit with the common people of Jammu and Kashmir, the decision didn’t come as a surprise. They know that J&K is not a safe bet for them which is why they prefer to drag their feet over assembly polls…,” he added.

“The consequences of derailing democracy in J&K would not augur well for the prized freedom, stability, and strength of our country. Having air dropped bureaucratic setup in place in Jammu and Kashmir will compound alienation among people especially the youth and put the entire region on the path of further alienation,” he said.

CPI (M) leader MY Tarigami questioned as to how long J&K would be under the bureaucratic rule

“Deferring the publication of electoral rolls reflects the government’s intentions of not holding the elections, thereby preventing the people from having an elected government. This government has no temerity to face people. How long will J&K reel under the bureaucratic rule?” he asked.
