Chhatrasal Stadium murder case: Delhi Court grants interim bail to one of the accused

A Delhi Court on Friday granted interim bail to one of the accused arrested along with Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar in Junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar murder case at Chhatrasal stadium on the night of May 4, 2021.


Rahul @ Dhanda @ Rahul Kumar one of the accused moved an application U/s. 439 Cr. P. C for grant of interim bail for 30 days by submitting that his father is suffering from carcinoma and his surgery is scheduled for 28.04.2023.


Government Counsel opposed the bail application by submitting that there are other members in the family who may take care of his father. He further submitted that accused person and victims are of the same fraternity and locality and if bail is granted he may influence the witnesses and may jump the bail, if granted.


Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand said,” Keeping in view the fact that the father of the accused is suffering from carcinoma and is admitted in hospital, on humanitarian grounds, it is ordered that applicant/accused be released on interim bail for a period of one week from the date of his release on his furnishing personal bond of the sum of Rs. one Lakh with two sureties in the like amount.”


Counsel for the accused submitted that accused is unable to furnish the surety bonds to the tune of Rs.1 Lakh due to weak financial position and requested for reducing the same.
The court said, “Considering his submission, applicant/accused is ordered to be released on interim bail for a period of one week from the date of his release on his furnishing personal bond in the sum of Rs. 50,000 with two sureties in the like amount.


He further directed, “The applicant/accused is directed to surrender before the concerned Jail Superintendent immediately after the expiry of the period of interim bail and concerned jail superintendent shall send his report immediately thereafter”.


In this matter the court has framed charges of murder, attempt to murder, rioting, unlawful assembly and other sections including criminal conspiracy against Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar and others on October,12 in the Junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar murder case.


The prosecution has alleged in the matter that the manner in which Sagar and three others were abducted and brought to Chhatrasal Stadium and after that beaten up mercilessly showing that they wanted to establish their supremacy.


The prosecution contended that there is sufficient evidence to show the intention of the accused persons to kill Sagar Dhankar.


The wrestler Sagar and Sonu were allegedly beaten up in Chhatrasal stadium on the night of 4 May 2021. Sagar succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital.


Sushil Kumar along with co-accused Ajay Kumar was arrested on May 23, 2021 from outer Delhi’s Mundka area.
