‘Help desks will have lawyers, psychologists, NGOs to facilitate legal aid, rehabilitation’

Srinagar: In a significant development, Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sanctioned Rs 100 Crore from Nirbhaya Fund for setting up women help desks in police stations in Jammu and Kashmir UT and Ladakh UT and elsewhere in the country.

According to wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the move according to the MHA sources said will focus on making the Police Stations more women friendly and approachable, as they would be the first and single point of contact for any woman walking into a police station.

“Essentially, lady police officers would be deployed at these help desks. The officials of Women Help Desk would be trained to be sensitive towards women,” reads a hand out issued by the MHA.

He said these help desks would have enlisted panel of experts like lawyers, psychologists and NGOs to facilitate legal aid, counseling, shelter, rehabilitation and training etc.

A senior police official said that the step will help raise the morale of women victims whether they are the victims of domestic violence, cruelty by in-laws other societal crimes. (KNO)
