Security forces have arrested three suspects, including a former militant, who were allegedly behind a recent grenade attack on an Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Police said a grenade was hurdled at Hamrey Pattan in Baramulla on the evening of January 7 towards the 163 Territorial Army premises which exploded causing damage to the structure. However, no one was injured in the incident.
Upon receiving the information, an FIR was registered at Police Station Pattan and an investigation was promptly initiated.
Briefing reporters, Superintendent of Police Firoz Yehya on Saturday said that following the attack, necessary legal procedures, including evidence collection at the scene of the crime, were carried out meticulously.
“Through an in-depth analysis of electronic and technical evidence, coupled with human intelligence and relentless efforts by multiple investigative teams, three perpetrators were apprehended within 24 hours of the incident,” Yehya said.
He said on their instance a hand grenade, AK series rifle, a pistol, 256 live AK rounds and 21 live pistol rounds were recovered.
The officer didn’t divulge the names of those arrested saying this could compromise the ongoing investigations.
However, the SP said one of the arrested individuals was a released terrorist.
“Another is the son of a surrendered/released terrorist. The third individual, the prima-facie mastermind had been evading arrest in a narco-terror case for the past two years,” he said.
Yehya said the disturbing involvement of surrendered or released terrorists and their close family members in such activities poses challenges to efforts aimed at “reintegrating the community into the mainstream.”
The Top Police officer strongly cautioned surrendered and released militants against engaging in terror and anti-national activities.
“Such actions contradict their requests for leniency in surveillance and undermine the trust-building measures,” he said.
