Four charred to death as car catches fire after being hit by truck

Four members of a family were charred to death when a car caught fire after being hit by a truck in Rampur Maniharan area of Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.

Police sources said that the incident took place when the car caught fire after being hit by the truck coming from behind on a flyover on Saharanpur by-pass.

“It is being said that the car driver applied brakes after overtaking a truck and the vehicle was hit by another truck coming behind it,” they said.

The sources also said that after being hit by the truck the car caught fire. “By the time Rampur Maniharan police reached the spot all the passengers were charred to death and the car was completely gutted in the fire,” they said.

Police sources further said that a retired employee of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Umesh Goel (70), a resident of Jwalapur in Haridwar, along with his wife Sunita Goel (65), brother-in-law Amreesh Jindal and his wife Geeta Jindal (50) were travelling in the car.

“The victims were going to attend a ceremony in Jagadhri in Haryana,” they said.

Police sources said that after getting information Superintendent of Police (City) Abhimanyu Mangalik reached the spot and identified the car owner Pallavi Goel with the help of the registration number.

“When contacted Pallavi gave details of the car passengers along with the contact number of Umesh’s son Anurag Goel,” they said.

Police sources said that the truck driver involved in the incident was arrested by the police from a roadside eatery some five to six kilometres away from the spot.

“The driver told the police that the car was hit when its driver applied brakes to avoid collision with the truck moving in front of him,” they said.

A forensic team visited the spot and collected evidence. “Family members of deceased Umesh, including his son Anurag, have reached Saharanpur,” the sources added.
