Finally, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) is likely to get its Chairman as Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti will chair a meeting Friday evening here.
Three candidates, including two retired chief justices- Nisar Ahmad Kakroo and Bilal Nazki- and retired justice Hakeem Imtiyaz- are in the list, among which one will be appointed as SHRC chairman.
The selection panel, headed by Mehbooba, will have Lower House Opposition leader Omar Abdullah, Speaker Legislative Assembly, Kavinder Gupta, Chairman Legislative Council, Anayat Ali, and Opposition Leader in Legislative Council Ali Muhammad Dar as other members.
The meeting will be held in Nehru Guest House in Chashmashi today evening.
With no chairman since June 2014, State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) was virtually defunct. Its acting chairman Rafiq Fida Hussain retired in 2014.
After the appointment of the chairman likely today, four members will be appointed to make the rights commission functional.
Human rights cases were piling up in the commission for the last two years even as the High Court too had last year directed the government to appoint the chairman to make the commission functional.
Earlier, this month National Human Rights Commission New Delhi too had directed the state government to explain its position in delaying appointment of the Chairman and members of the commission. The NHRC had directed the state to file its report within six weeks. (KNS)
