Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) on Wednesday said that the harassment of human rights activist Navsharan Singh by the Enforcement Directorate was “unfortunate and undemocratic”.

Navsharan Singh, daughter of late playwright Gursharan Singh, was summoned under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by ED on May 10 about certain financial transactions with Aman Biradari and her association with activist Harsh Mander. She was questioned for eight hours by the ED. Navsharan is a board member of Aman Biradari, which is working for the victims of communal violence and families of those lynched.

IPTA Punjab president Sanjivan, general secretary Indrajeet Rupawali, IPTA Chandigarh head Balkar Sidhu among others, in a joint statement, condemned the ED action and said that pro-people voices cannot be silenced by such actions.

Earlier, Farmers unions and left leaning organisations including BKU Ekta Ugrahan,Punjab Lok Sabhacharak Manch also came out in support of Navsharan.

Navsharan had supported farmers’ agitation at Delhi borders against farm laws.
