J&K Police registers case after Army personnel “beat” a civilian on Srinagar outskirts

J&K Police has taken cognisance and registered a case after some army personnel beat a civilian on Srinagar outskirts on Monday.

A video of the incident showing a soldier beating a civilian at Nowgan here had gone viral on social media, with netizens seeking action against the guilty. It was not clear what caused the incident.

Police said this afternoon an incident came to notice wherein some army personnel in uniform reportedly beat one civilian while other personnel present also got involved in minor fight at Nowgam Chowk.
“On receipt of this information, cognisance of incident was taken and a case under FIR number 116/2022 under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt),341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of IPC was registered in Nowgam Police Station . Investigation has been taken up, “ a police statement said.

The Army said they are checking the veracity of the video.

“A video has gone viral on social media showing altercation between IA and civilians. Chinar Corps is checking the veracity of the video. Prima facie it appears to be an old video, deliberately posted to tarnish the image of Armed Forces,” an Army officer said.
