Lady commits suicide, family alleges harassment by husband

A lady has allegedly committed suicide by jumping into river Jhelum near Rajbagh area of Srinagar on Tuesday morning while the family has been alleged harassment by her husband, which according to them compelled her to take the extreme step.

An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a lady identified as Ulfat Jan (45), wife of Farooq Ahmad Malik of Sonwar, has jumped into the river Jhelum near Rajbagh Srinagar, where from the body was retrieved and taken to the hospital for medico-legal formalities.

Soon after the news spread, a pall of gloom descended the area following which the nearby residents started visiting the residence in Sonwar where a protest was held by the family members of the lady.

They alleged that the deceased was harassed by her husband, which forced her to take the extreme step
