Maccabi Tel Aviv beats Real Madrid in overtime in EuroLeague

Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv secured a 100-96 home win in overtime against Spanish champions Real Madrid in the final round of basketball’s EuroLeague regular season on Thursday evening.

The victory placed Maccabi fifth in the 18-team regular season, with a 20-14 win-loss record, pairing the Israeli team with fourth-placed AS Monaco in the playoff quarterfinals, to be played in a best-of-five series. Real, who hold a 23-11 record, will finish second if Barcelona loses at home to Valencia on Friday or third if Barcelona wins. Real’s opponent will be determined after Friday’s games.

In front of a full house of 11,000 fans at the Menora Mivtachim Arena in Tel Aviv, the first quarter ended with the visitors leading 18-16. Guerschon Yabusele and Sergio Rodriguez then inspired Real to take a 42-37 lead at halftime.

The lead switched hands seven times during the third quarter, which ended 65-62 in favor of Maccabi. The gap increased to 80-73, thanks to points from Wade Baldwin.

With 22 seconds remaining, Gabriel Deck tied the game at 86-86. John DiBartolomeo missed a three-pointer for Maccabi with two seconds left, sending the game into overtime. The closely contested match continued for most of the extra five minutes until crucial points by Roman Sorkin and Darrun Hilliard secured Maccabi’s important win.

Lorenzo Brown scored 22 points for Maccabi, while his teammate Josh Nebo added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Bonzie Colson contributed 14 points and 9 rebounds for the hosts.

Yabusele finished with a game-high 25 points, along with 8 rebounds. Dzanan Musa added 20 points for Real.
