Mehbooba, Azad welcome SC verdict staying Rahul Gandhi’s conviction

Former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti, Ghulam Nabi Azad and former Union Minister Saif ud-din Soz on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court verdict staying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in “Modi Surname” case.


“It’s a good thing…There was no effect of his disqualification”, Democratic Progressive Azad Party Chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad said on the Apex Court staying conviction of Rahul Gandhi in ‘Modi’ surname remark defamation case.


Azad in a tweet said Rahul Gandhi was doing the same job which he was doing earlier as an MP.


Former Union Minister Saifuddin Soz on Friday said that it is heartening that the Top Court has restored Member of Parliament status to Rahul Gandhi and stayed all defamation charges lodged against him by the ruling party at the Centre!”.


He said the Supreme Court’s decision will be a celebration for millions of people in India and elsewhere, who have faith in the Congress party as a strong secular force dedicated to the cause of Democracy and Togetherness of all Indians, irrespective of caste, colour and creed.


“I have a feeling that the general run of Indians also hopes that Rahul Gandhi will continue to raise his powerful voice in the Lok Sabha with his emphasis on Communal Harmony in India and Solidarity of all Indians!” he added.


“I welcome the Supreme Court verdict staying Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a case that had no legs to stand upon”, Mehbooba Mufti said in a tweet.


“Glad that he will be back in Parliament fighting for the idea of India”, She said.
Supreme Court in an interim order on Friday stayed the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the criminal defamation case over the “Modi surname” remark.


Former Lok Sabha member and Congress leader Tariq Karra said truth alone triumphs.

Meanwhile, Congress workers at party headquarters at Moulana Azad road celebrated the Supreme Court verdict and distributed sweets among others.
