NIA to probe Kokernag encounter case in JK

National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the Kokernag encounter case in, Anantnag district, which resulted in the death of three senior officers from Army and J&K Police and a soldier in September this year.

The case was handed over to the NIA following a notification from the Union Home Ministry, officials said.

The encounter, being probed by the NIA, began on the night of September 13 when the senior officers came under heavy fire as they approached the suspected hideout in the Gadole forest in Kokernag.

Due to the intense firefight an Army Colonel, a Major, a Deputy Superintendent of J&K Police were killed. During the initial shootout, another soldier was also injured and his body was found on the third day of the operation.

The operation lasted for seven days in which top Lashkar-e-Toiba Commander Uzair Khan was killed.

This is the second militancy related case in Kashmir that has been handed over to NIA in this month .

The NIA also started investigating the assassination of Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani who was shot on October 29 and succumbed earlier this month.
