PM Modi to rename Adampur Airport, inaugurate Halwara Terminal during Punjab visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab on Sunday to rename Adampur Airport in honour of Sant Guru Ravidas Ji and inaugurate a new terminal building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana, the government announced on Saturday.

According to an official release, the Prime Minister will reach Adampur Airport at around 3.45 pm, where he will unveil its new name, ‘Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport, Adampur’marking the 649th birth anniversary of the revered saint and social reformer. During the visit, he will also inaugurate the terminal building at Halwara Airport, strengthening civil aviation infrastructure in the state.

“The renaming of Adampur Airport honours Sant Guru Ravidas Ji, whose teachings of equality, compassion and human dignity continue to inspire India’s social ethos,” the release said.

Sant Guru Ravidas Ji is widely respected for his role in the Bhakti movement and his emphasis on social harmony and justice, particularly among marginalised communities. The decision to name the airport after him is seen as a symbolic recognition of his enduring influence on India’s social and cultural fabric.

The Prime Minister’s visit will also spotlight infrastructure development in Punjab’s aviation sector. The newly inaugurated terminal at Halwara Airport is expected to serve as a major gateway for Ludhiana and its surrounding industrial and agricultural regions.

“Further advancing aviation infrastructure in Punjab, the terminal building at Halwara Airport will cater to Ludhiana and its surrounding hinterland,” the release said, noting that Halwara is also home to a strategically important Indian Air Force station.

The earlier civil airport at Ludhiana had a relatively short runway, limiting operations to small aircraft. To improve regional connectivity and enable operations of larger planes, a new civil enclave has been developed at Halwara with a longer runway capable of handling A320-type aircraft.

Aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of sustainable and environmentally responsible development, the terminal incorporates several green features, including LED lighting, insulated roofing, rainwater harvesting systems, sewage and water treatment plants, and the use of recycled water for landscaping.

“The architectural design reflects Punjab’s rich cultural heritage, offering passengers a distinctive and regionally inspired travel experience,” the release added.

The visit comes as the Centre continues to push for improved regional air connectivity and modern infrastructure, particularly in economically significant states like Punjab.
