Police protect the Nation’s integrity alongside armed forces: Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday paid homage to police martyrs at the National Police Memorial on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, saluting their supreme sacrifice and unwavering service to the nation.

Recalling the 1959 Hot Springs incident in Ladakh, where ten policemen were martyred in an ambush by Chinese troops, Singh said the day honours the bravery of those who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

He said the police are vital to maintaining internal security and protecting society’s integrity, just as the Armed Forces safeguard the nation’s borders. “If the Army protects the country, the police protect society. Both are pillars of India’s security,” he said.

Singh emphasised that effective policing depends on mutual trust between citizens and law enforcement. “When society cooperates with the police and respects the law, peace and progress follow,” he noted.

He also highlighted the growing challenges of modern crime, saying police today must combat not just violence but also threats to privacy, identity, and trust. “People sleep peacefully because they know our soldiers guard the borders and our police protect their homes,” Singh added.(KINS)
