Armed men attacked policemen providing security for polio vaccination workers in Pakistan’s northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing a cop on the spot, police officials said on Thursday.
The incident happened when unidentified miscreants opened fire on the polio team in the Miryan area of Bannu district of the province on Wednesday, police sources in the area told Xinhua.
The attack came on the third day of a week-long campaign to administer the polio vaccination to approximately 2.7 million children under five years of age in the province, said police.
No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
The perpetrators fled the scene after carrying out the attack, police said, adding that law enforcers have launched an operation in the surrounding areas to arrest the culprit.
This is the second time policemen providing security to polio workers got attacked in August. Earlier last week, two policemen escorting a polio vaccination team were shot dead in the country’s southwest Balochistan province.
