Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday
announced the cash reward of Rs 40 lakh each for weightlifters Lovepreet Singh and
Gurdeep Singh who have won the medals at on going Commonwealth Games (CWG) in
Birmingham.
Lovepreet and Gurdeep both won the bronze medals in their respective weight
categories.
Taking to Twitter Mann said: “Congratulations to Lovepreet Singh of Sri Amritsar Sahib
for winning bronze medal in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games… Lovepreet will
be given a prize money of 40 lakhs as per the sports policy of the government…”
“Congratulations to Gurdeep Singh of village near Khanna for winning bronze medal in
weightlifting 109kg weight category during Commonwealth Games…A prize money of Rs
40 lakh will be given to Gurdeep by Punjab Govt. Congratulations too… All the best for
the future…” he said in another tweet.
Lovepreet bettered his own national record of 350kg with a total lift of 355kg (snatch –
163kg; clean and jerk – 192kg) in the men’s 109 kg event at the National Exhibition
Centre (NEC).
Gurdeep bagged the bronze in men’s plus 109 kg category with a total lift of 390kg (
Snatch 167kg; Clean and Jerk 223 kg).
