Shavkat Mirziyoyev re-elected as Prez of Uzbekistan

Shavkat Mirziyoyev was re-elected as the President of Uzbekistan, as per the preliminary results of the presidential elections announced by the Central Election Commission on Monday.

The presidential elections were held in Uzbekistan on Sunday after President Mirziyoyev on May 8 called a snap poll following the adoption of a new version of the country’s Constitution at a nationwide referendum. Seventy-nine per cent of the eligible people exercised their franchise in the elections.

According to the CEC, Mirziyoyev, who is the Liberal Democratic Party’s nominee, polled 87.05 per cent of the vote. Mirziyoyev is followed by candidates from the Social Democratic Party “Adolat” Robakhon Makhmudov, People’s Democratic Party Ulugbek Inoyatov and Ecological Party Abdushukur Khamzaev. They polled 4.43 per cent, 4.02 per cent and 3.74 per cent votes respectively.

Meanwhile, leaders of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan have congratulated Mirziyoyev on his convincing victory in the elections.

Uzbekistan is one of India’s main strategic partners in Central Asia.

Trade between the two countries increased by about 40 per cent last year. Both the nations are striving to bring the volume of bilateral trade up to $1 billion a year in the coming years.
