Shopian court directs police to arrest journalist for ‘non-appearance’

Srinagar, (UNI) A local court of Shopian has issued an arrest warrant against a Kashmiri journalist and author for not appearing before the court. Gowhar Geelani was directed to ensure personal appearance before the Court of Executive Magistrate First Class in south Kashmir on February 7, for “acting” in a manner that tends to “disturb” public peace.

The Court directed the Station House Officer of Heerpora to arrest Geelani, in view of his “non-appearance” before the court. “In view of non-appearance of Gowhar Nazir Geelani after serving notice at him under Section 107/151 CrPC vide number TS/ESTT/21-22/145, dated February 3, 2022, you are directed to arrest the above person before this court on February 19, in order to maintain peace and public tranquility in the jurisdiction of this court,” said the order.

Geelani is an independent reporter, who worked with Deutsche Welle for several years in Germany.
