A fresh spell of snowfall began across the Kashmir valley on Monday as the region battles an intense winter that has so far plummeted temperatures to freezing levels.
The snowfall began early morning with varying intensity in the region, including the summer capital Srinagar, where light snowfall continued throughout the day.
The latest precipitation is expected to last till Tuesday evening. The Weather Department has warned of downpour at isolated places today and tomorrow.
An official of the Srinagar Meteorological Centre said snowfall had been received across the Kashmir valley, including the tourist resorts in south and north Kashmir.
The official said the snowfall was received in Srinagar, ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir and Pahalgam in south Kashmir.
The latest round of precipitation is the sixth spell of downpour in the region since first week of November, when autumnal snowfall forced an early winter in the region.
Out of the six spell of precipitation till date, four spells included snowfall that had caused widespread destruction to orchards and infrastructure.
The precipitation has also brought some respite from the severe cold wave in the region as minimum temperatures that had fallen several degrees below average and many degrees below the freezing point showed signs of getting stable.
For a second consecutive night, the temperature in Srinagar remained close to freezing point making it one of the warmest nights in recent weeks, during which the mercury had plummeted to as low as six degrees below the freezing point in the city here.
The minimum temperature in the city here was recorded at -0.8°C overnight which was nearly similar to minimum temperature of the last night.
The overnight temperature in Pahalgam was recorded at -3°C and Gulmarg recorded a minimum of -8.5°C, the official said.(TNS)
