Soldier Injured In Ongoing Kupwara Gunfight

An army soldier was injured in an ongoing gunfight at Chokibal forest area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

A police officer told Srinagar based news agency GNS that army’s 41 RR, 16 Grenadiers and 19 Maratha Regiment cordoned off the Zonreshi, Marsari villages close to forests today morning following the specific information about the presence of some militants in the area.

As such the cordon-and-search operation by the joint team of forces was underway in Marsari village, militants believed to be two in number opened fire upon the forces, the officer said.

The fire was retaliated triggering off an encounter, he said.

A soldier of 41 RR sustained bullet injuries and efforts are on to evacuate him to nearby hospital for treatment, the officer said.  

The cordon-and-search operation was going on in the area with the additional reinforcement of commandos from 4 PARA and Special Operation Group of Police, he said.(Agencies)
