Srinagar, April 16 (UNI) A soldier of the Army’s counter insurgency unit was killed in an ongoing operation in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, official sources said on Saturday.
They said the soldier was killed during a gun battle at Watnar Kokernag area of Anantnag district.
“As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened indiscriminate firing in which a soldier was wounded. He was shifted to a medical facility where he succumbed,” a security official said.
The identity of the slain soldier could not be established immediately.
Army is yet to confirm the death.
The gunfight erupted at a time when there have been a series of targeted attacks on non locals, minority community and panchayat members. On Friday evening, an independent Sarpanch was shot dead in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
