Spanish PM slams US and Israel, calls actions against Iran “Unjust and Illegal”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday condemned the military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran, labeling them an “unjust and illegal war” in a speech to the Spanish Congress.

Highlighting the broader consequences, Sánchez said the interventions have “undermined international law, destabilized the Middle East and reignited conflicts in Iraq and Lebanon.” He warned that Gulf countries were left exposed due to decisions by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Sánchez also criticized the impact on the Ukraine war, claiming that US and Israeli policies have inadvertently strengthened Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Russia is benefiting financially thanks to rising fuel prices and the lifting of sanctions also brought about by the US administration,” he said.

Spain has maintained a firm stance throughout the crisis, denying the US access to its Rota naval base and Morón air base in Andalucía. Trump had responded by claiming Spain “doesn’t have great leadership” and demanding the US “cut off all trade with Spain.”

Sánchez, however, stood by his principles. “Being an ally or a friend means loyalty to principles that we share,” he told lawmakers. “It means having the courage to stand firm when the path is wrong.”
