Colombo, (UNI) Sri Lankan authorities said on Monday that they have shipped back to the United Kingdom the last of several hundred containers filled with thousands of tonnes of illegally imported waste. This shipment of waste arrived in Sri Lanka from the UK between 2017 and 2019 listed as “used mattresses, carpets and rugs”.

But the waste actually contained tonnes of biowaste from hospitals, including body parts from mortuaries, Sri Lankan officials said. They further said that the containers were not frozen leading to some of them emanating a very foul powerful stench. The 45 containers today shipped back were the final batch out of a total of 263 containers which held some 3,000 tonnes of waste.
