Srinagar Freezes At -5.6°C, Drass At -31.5°C

As a severe cold wave grips the Kashmir valley and Ladakh, the overnight temperatures dropped to the lowest so far of the season as Srinagar recorded -5.6°C and the remote Drass town registered a freezing low of -31.5°C.

The minimum temperatures across the region dropped to freezing levels as the Kashmir region is experiencing Chillai Kalan, a 40-day-long period of extreme cold weather, which lasts till the end of January.

The first week of Chillai Kalan has been extremely cold as the mercury has consistently dropped several degrees below the freezing point enveloping the region in a severe cold wave.

On Friday, the water bodies in Srinagar were frozen as the city recorded a low of -5.6°C marking the coldest night of the season here.

The tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded another freezing night as the temperature there dropped to -12°C, while north Kashmir’s famed Gulmarg resort recorded a low of -9.5°C, an official of the Meteorological Centre here said.

Qazigund, Kashmir valley’s southern gateway town, registered a low of -10.5°C overnight, while the frontier Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of -6.3°C.

While the minimum temperatures in Kashmir valley have dropped to freezing levels, the mercury in the remote Ladakh region plummeted to extreme levels overnight.(TNS)
