Traffic police on Wednesday said that traffic mess in the city cannot be managed by the department alone as people are not cooperating and abiding by the rules.

The department said that different government departments are responsible for its management but only traffic police is doing its job.

“All the departments responsible for management of the traffic are not playing their role. The departments need to work in unison to end the menace. Our department cannot manage the traffic alone,” SSP Traffic Maqsood-U-Zaman told reporters during an interaction with them.

Zaman said that more than 17000 passenger cabs have been challaned by the police in the last months. He said that total 43000 passenger cabs (Sumos and Taveras) are plying in the Valley.

“Despite these challans, there is no visible effect because only law enforcement cannot help unless vehicle owners change their mind and become socially responsible and behave like true citizens,” the SSP said.

He said that the 70 per cent of road surface in the city has been occupied and encroached by the vendors and shopkeepers.

“Big shopping malls have no parking space for shoppers. In addition people also don’t think to use parking space and park their vehicles on roadsides,” he said.

The traffic department had today organized a meeting with media persons to take feedback and suggestion about traffic management in the city.(Agencies)
