Two arrested in connection with boat capsize incident

Two persons were arrested by the police on Tuesday in connection with boat capsizing incident in Phephana area of Ballia district here in Uttar Pradesh in which four

persons were killed, police sources said.

Police sources said that the owner of the boat, which capsized, Moonji, a resident of Maldepur, and oarsman Ram Dayal, a resident of Haibatpur, have been arrested by the police.

“A case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been lodged against the two accused,” they said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Raj Karan Nayyar said that the boat owner and oarsman have been sent to jail.

District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar said that after an overnight rescue operation the NDRF and SDRF teams fished out the body of another victim Surendra Yada on Tuesday morning.

“With this the toll in this incident has increased to four. The rescue operation has been called off as no information about any other missing person has been received by the administration,” he said.

It may be noted that initially three women died whereas three others were rescued when a boat capsized in Ganga river in Phephana area on Monday.

The boat ferrying around 30 people, who came to attend a mundan ceremony, capsized at Maldepur Ganga Ghat. It was being said that the incident took place when the motor of the boat developed a snag and it overturned due to strong wind.
