Two SC judges to take oath on Friday

Two days after the Supreme Court’s Collegium recommended senior advocate KV Viswanathan, and Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra as Apex Court judges, the Central government on Thursday cleared their names.

Justice Mishra and senior advocate Viswanathan will take oath as Judges of the Supreme Court Friday at 10.30 am.

The Centre cleared their names in 48 hours.

“The two new judges will take oath tomorrow morning. Sr adv KV Viswanathan will go on to become the CJI in August 2030 for almost nine months,” a statement issued by the Supreme Court said.

Viswanathan would be in line to assume office as the Chief Justice of India from August 2030, till his retirement May 25, 2031.

The Supreme Court Collegium had on May 16 recommended the names of Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Senior Advocate KV Vishwanathan as Supreme Court judges.

The Supreme Court of India has a sanctioned strength of 34 Judges and is presently functioning with 32 Judges. With Friday’s inclusion of two judges, the strength would attain 34, the optimum in the Top court.

The five-member Supreme Court collegium, which recommended the names, was headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chadrachud and four other seniormost judges– Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, K M oseph, Ajay Rastogi and Sanjiv Khanna.
