United Nations, March 14 (UNI/Sputnik) The United Nations will allocate an additional $40 million to Ukraine to secure aid the most vulnerable populations amid the current crisis in the country, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday.

“I am announcing today that the United Nations will allocate a further $40 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to ramp up vital assistance to reach the most vulnerable as we wait for the nations to come,” Guterres said during remarks to the press.

UN is also launching a Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance amid conflict, climate change and the pandemic, Guterres said.

“Against the backdrop of these immense inter-connected challenges, I am announcing today the establishment of a Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance in the UN Secretariat.” Guterres said that the prospect of nuclear conflict is again in the realm of possibility.

“The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility, The security and safety of nuclear facilities must also be preserved.”

World leaders ought to resist the temptation of increasing military budgets instead of development assistance and climate change programs, Guterres said. “My plea to leaders is to resist the temptation of increasing military budgets at the expense of Official Development Assistance and climate action.”
