A 55-year-old businessman and his son were shot dead by unidentified persons in the Maharajganj area of Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, a police officer said.

In-charge of Maharajganj police station Sanjay Singh said that Rashid, a resident of Gopalpur village, ran a ready-made garment business from his house in Sardaha Bazar.

“On Wednesday morning, while Rashid and his son Shoaib (20) were cleaning their shop, three motorcycle-borne miscreants reached the spot,” he said.

He said that the miscreants first shot Rashid inside the shop. “When Shoaib, in a bid to save his life, ran towards the under-construction portion of the house, the miscreants chased and shot him as well. The father-son duo died on the spot,” they said.

Singh said that the miscreants later escaped from the spot, waving firearms.

“A case has been lodged under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and a police team has been constituted to arrest the assailants,” he said.
