Five persons were injured in a firing allegedly during a procession, on the occasion of Youm-e-Ashura, taken out during the Muharram month in Civil Lines area of Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, police sources said.
However, the police claimed that the incident had nothing to do with the Muharram procession as it had already passed.
Sources said that the incident took place in Raipur when the two parties had a scuffle while the procession was being taken out. “During scuffle someone opened fire in which five persons were injured,” they said.
Sources also said that the injured, identified as Naeem, Furkaan, Imran, Islam and Babu, have been admitted to the district hospital. “Heavy police force has reached the spot after the incident,” they said.
Sources said that the scuffle broke out between village head Zakir, his brother Naeem and their opponent over an old rivalry.
Meanwhile, the in-charge of Civil Lines police station Sharad Pawar said that the scuffle did not take place during the procession.
He said the two parties were already having a rivalry and the dispute took place over passing the procession outside the house of one side.
Pawar said that the dispute had nothing to do with the procession.
