Three women drowned whereas three others were rescued when a boat capsized in Ganga River in Kotwali area of Ballia district here in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, an administration official said.
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar said that a boat ferrying around 30 people, who came to attend a mundan ceremony capsized at Maldepur Ganga Ghat. “It is being said that the incident took place when the motor of the boat developed a snag and it capsized due to strong wind,” he said.
He said that a rescue operation was launched in which almost all passengers have been taken out. “Three women died in the incident and three others have been admitted to the district hospital. The rescue operation continues to ensure that nobody is trapped under the boat,” he said.
The DM said that the boatman was absconding and the matter will be investigated.
