Asserting the Congress government’s stand against the alleged saffronisation of the police department, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday warned the top police officials from wearing dresses belonging to political outfits.
“We won’t allow anyone to violate the law. There have been instances in Mangaluru, Vijayapura, and Bagalkot, where policemen have posed in saffron attire,” he said.
He also said that taking photos of themselves wearing such dresses is also unconstitutional, and the government will not allow it.
Shivakumar, on May 23, flayed Karnataka police officials and questioned them that they are trying to saffronise the state police department. “Are you all set to saffronise the police department? We will not allow it under our government,” he asserted.
On May 23, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the incumbent Congress government will put an end to moral policing in the state.
“There will not be any moral policing. We will put an end to this,” he told reporters here. He made this statement replying to a query on his meeting with top police officers at Vidhana Soudha.
Siddaramaiah said the police have been directed not to consider the religion of the accused while taking action against them and provide equal security to all.
The incumbent CM also said that the government would take stern action against not only the police inspector, but also the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for crimes taking place in their jurisdiction.
“If any crime takes place in a certain police station limit, not only the police inspector, but also DCP will be held responsible. We will take strict action against them,” he said.
He also directed the police to give people-friendly administration and complainants should be treated politely.
