Srinagar, (UNI) A young man attempted to immolate himself in protest against a demolition drive in Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said. He was saved by others at the site.

Aamir Hamid Shah set himself alight in protest when the demolition was on at Harran Kangan in Ganderbal district.
A video of the incident which went viral on social media showed him in flames running on the roof of a complex. Several Netizens criticized the police who were at the site but did nothing to save the man.
However, the police said the youth was rescued by the Station House Officer of Ganderbal and locals.
Police said the demolition drive was undertaken by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department over the banks of Nalla Sindh.
“Amir suddenly appeared from behind the illegal structure and  self immolated on its roof  in protest against the demolition. (He) was rescued by the SHO Ganderbal and locals… However he received burn injuries  and was shifted to a hospital,” a police statement said.
The police said a deep trench was dug by the owners of the structure to prevent any ingress into the premises which prevented a prompt rescue.
