10 dead in Tumbler Ridge School shooting in British Columbia

As many as 10 people, including the suspected shooter, have died in a mass shooting at a high school and a nearby residence in Tumbler Ridge, in the province of British Columbia, Canadian authorities said on Tuesday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said officers responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School around 1:20 pm local time. Six people were found dead inside the school, another died on the way to the hospital, and two additional victims were discovered at a residence believed to be connected to the incident.

The suspected shooter was also found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted injury, the RCMP said. Authorities confirmed there are no other suspects at large.

About 25 people were injured, with two seriously hurt and airlifted to the hospital, while others were treated locally for non-life-threatening injuries. All students and staff were safely evacuated, the RCMP added.

Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Tumbler Ridge has a population of roughly 2,400 people.

British Columbia Premier David Eby expressed condolences on X following the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge that left at least 10 people dead, including the suspected shooter.

“Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones,” Eby wrote.

He added, “Government will ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.”
