The Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconstruction (DMRRR), Jammu and Kashmir, has issued a weather advisory following a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar, predicting widespread rain and snowfall across the Union Territory from October 5 to 7, 2025. The weather system is expected to be most intense from the evening of October 5 till the afternoon of October 7.
According to the IMD, an active Western Disturbance will impact both divisions of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing moderate to heavy snowfall over higher reaches including Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg–Zojila, Bandipora–Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara–Sadhna Pass, while light snowfall is likely in the middle reaches. The Kashmir plains are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, whereas parts of the Jammu division may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds gusting up to 60–70 kmph.
The DMRRR, as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS), has cautioned that the prevailing weather conditions may lead to:
Disruption of surface transport, including the Jammu–Srinagar and Srinagar–Leh National Highways and other major routes in middle and higher reaches.
Moderate to severe thunderstorms with gusty winds at several locations.
Landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.
Rising water levels in rivers, streams, and nallas, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Adverse impacts on agricultural activities, prompting farmers to suspend field operations between October 5 and 7.
Travel and communication disruptions in high-altitude and snow-affected areas.
The department has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow precautionary measures to ensure the safety of life and property.
