Days after a senior member of the Apni Party parted ways, the party faced another setback on Monday when a former legislator Noor Mohammad Sheikh, reigned.

” I have resigned from the Apni Party and from now onwards I have no association with it,” Sheikh said.
A former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Sheikh had joined Altaf Bukahri led Apni Party in 2020.

” The party was formed for some reasons but in the last (parliament) election our party changed its basic stand . Our party made an alliance with the BJP which is an anti Muslims party and people here didn’t accept this,” said Sheikh.

Sheikh said he is exploring his future options.

Two days ago a senior vice president and founding member of the Apni Party, Usman Majid had also resigned.

The resignation spree follows as the party faced drubbing in the recently held general elections. Apni Party not only forfeited their deposits in the two Lok Sabha seats it contested but also failed to secure a lead in any of the 36 Assembly segments . The Apni Party had supported Sajad Lone in the Baramulla seat, which was won by jailed Awami Ittehad Party chief Sheikh Abdul Rashid aka Engineer Rashid.

The Apni Party was formed eight months after the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A in 2020.
