The death toll from Sunday’s attack by the Gran Grif gang in the Artibonite department of Haiti could reach 70, with dozens injured, Radio Tele Galaxie reported citing the mayor of Petit-Riviere-de-l’Artibonite.
The National Police of Haiti previously reported on social media that the preliminary death toll from the attack was 16, with another 10 local residents injured.
The mayor expressed his condolences to the families of the victims in the districts of Jean-Denis, Negriel, Pont-Benoit, and Degorde, calling on the country’s authorities to take measures to stabilize the situation.
According to Haitian police, Sunday’s attack was carried out by members of the Gran Grif gang. Before the attack, they dug large holes in the roads to hinder the arrival of security forces, then set fire to residential buildings and opened fire on civilians. Law enforcement has regained control of the area, and a search is currently underway for the perpetrators.
