Changing wording of UNSC resolution on Gaza ‘disappointing’ – Russian UN Envoy

The change of the wording of the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution on Gaza at the request of the United States is “disappointing,” Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said on Monday.

“The wording ‘permanent’ would be more precise, and we are disappointed that it did not make it through,” Nebenzia told the UNSC.

Earlier today, the Security Council members adopted a resolution calling for an immediate Ramadan ceasefire in Gaza that leads to a lasting and sustainable ceasefire.

The draft resolution was to call for a “permanent sustainable ceasefire,” but the word “permanent” was removed at the last-minute request of the United States.

Before the vote, Russia proposed an amendment to return the call for a “permanent ceasefire,” protesting the “weak wording.” The amendment was backed by China and Algeria, but was blocked by the United States, with 11 others abstaining.
