Drug addiction is a growing concern in Kashmir, a region located in the northernmost part of India. The state of Jammu and Kashmir, which includes the Kashmir valley, has been grappling with drug abuse and addiction for many years now. According to reports, the problem has become more severe in recent years due to a rise in drug trafficking and the availability of cheap, synthetic drugs. The issue of drug addiction is not limited to any specific age group or gender, and it affects people from all walks of life.

In fact, studies suggest that drug addiction in Kashmir is prevalent among young people aged between 15 and 35 years. This alarming trend has significant social, economic, and health implications for the region, and it requires urgent attention and action from the government, civil society, and the community at large.

In this context, it is crucial to understand the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to the problem of drug addiction in Kashmir. This essay will examine the factors contributing to drug addiction, the impact of addiction on individuals and society, and the measures that can be taken to address this issue. The place of tranquil, love and eternal beauty with a composed culture of shrines and other religious places of harmony known as Paradise on Earth is snowed under the trauma of a blurred future. The place where composed culture was representing the whole Kashmir is shattered now. Kashmir, the dream place of many, is going under a social, psychological disorder that is creating a headache to all from higher authorities to the ground ones.

The long-run armed conflicts and trauma in the Valley has its bad consequences on its residents, especially youngsters at large. Right now, echoed voices from all over the Valley are alarming regarding the rise of drug menace among youngsters. Substance abuse, also known as drug abuse, is a patterned use of substance by any method in which the consumer uses the substance in such an amount that is neither approved nor prescribed by any medical professionals and has a long-run bad impact on one’s health.

The problem of drug addiction in Kashmir has multifaceted causes. One significant factor contributing to drug abuse is the region’s location at the crossroads of major drug trafficking routes. As a result, the availability of drugs, including heroin, cannabis, and prescription drugs, has increased in the region, making it easier for people to access and abuse them.

Another factor contributing to drug addiction in Kashmir is unemployment and poverty. The region has a high unemployment rate, and many young people are unable to find stable jobs, leading to feelings of frustration and hopelessness. This lack of economic opportunities, coupled with the social stigma surrounding mental health issues, makes individuals vulnerable to drug addiction as a coping mechanism.

Drug addiction has significant implications for individuals and society. Addiction can lead to physical and psychological problems, including liver damage, respiratory problems, and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Moreover, drug addiction can lead to social problems, such as crime, violence, and the breakdown of family structures. Addressing the issue of drug addiction in Kashmir requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, there is a need for increased public awareness and education on the dangers of drug addiction. Schools and colleges should incorporate drug education programs into their curriculum, and community-based awareness campaigns should be launched to promote drug-free lifestyles.

Secondly, there is a need for increased access to addiction treatment and support services. The government should invest in the development of addiction treatment facilities, including detoxification centers, rehabilitation centers, and counselling services. These facilities should be accessible and affordable to all individuals, including those from low-income families.

Thirdly, there is a need for stricter law enforcement measures to prevent drug trafficking and distribution. The government should work in collaboration with law enforcement agencies to crack down on drug trafficking networks and to strengthen border controls to prevent the smuggling of drugs into the region
