China-US confrontation can be disaster for both countries, whole world: Wang Yi

A confrontation between China and the United States could be a disaster for both countries and the whole world, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said after US President Donald Trump’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“The confrontation (between China and the United States) is doomed to disaster for both countries and for the whole world, while cooperation can bring many great results that will benefit both countries and the whole world,” Wang Yi said, as quoted by China Central Television (CCTV).

Additionally, China and the United States, being the two largest economies in the world, cannot function without each other, the minister said.

“(Relations between China and the United States) should be manageable and stable, and not resemble a roller coaster with constant ups and downs,” the minister added.

Xi and Trump had nearly nine hours of interactions, the top Chinese diplomat said.

“This was an important meeting, during which the two heads of state engaged in in-depth discussions and achieved fruitful results. The meeting included formal talks and a welcoming banquet, as well as exchanges of views and smaller-scale visits,” Wang Yi was quoted as saying by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The leadership of Xi and Trump in steering the “ship of China-US relations” will have a far-reaching impact on the evolution of the international situation, he said.

Trump paid a state visit to China on May 13-15.
