Srinagar, April 8 (UNI) For the first time during the past two years the Friday congregational prayers in the month of Ramadan were held at the historical Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.
The Mosque situated at Nowhatta in downtown Srinagar remained closed during the past two years in the holy month of Ramadan due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
Thousands of people including women and children thronged the mosque from all walks of life today to offer the Friday congregational prayers in the mosque on the first Friday of the month of Ramadan.
The devotees were frisked by volunteers of the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid before allowing them to enter the mosque. The Friday sermon was delivered by the Moulana Syed Ahmad Syed Naqashbandi who also led the prayers.
After the prayers concluded, a group of worshippers shouted “pro freedom” slogans. The prayers ended peacefully.
The managing committee of the mosque – Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid – said people were disappointed with the continuous detention of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who used to lead the prayers.
They regretted that Mirwaiz continues under “arbitrary house arrest” for the third consecutive year.
The Anjuman again asked authorities to release Mirwaiz.
The congregational prayers on the first Friday of the month of Ramadah were also held at the Hazratbal shrine housing the holy relic of the Prophet Muhammad, Khan-e-Kah-e Mohalla, Dastageer Sahab Khanyar and all other mosques and shrines of the valley peacefully.
