HC grants interim bail to MP Engineer Rashid to visit ailing father

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday permitted a week-long interim bail to jailed Jammu and Kashmir MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid so he can meet his ailing father.

A division bench comprising Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Madhu Jain said that during the relief period, Rashid can either remain at his residence or visit the hospital where his father is undergoing treatment.

The court laid down strict conditions, directing that he be accompanied at all times by two plainclothes police personnel, with expenses to be borne by the authorities. It also restricted access to him, allowing only immediate family members and barring any unnecessary visitors.

The order came on Rashid’s appeal challenging an April 24 trial court decision that had denied him interim bail.

The Baramulla MP, who defeated Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is currently facing trial in a terror-funding case linked to alleged support for separatist and militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rashid has been in custody at Tihar Jail since 2019 following his arrest by the National Investigation Agency in a 2017 case.

Earlier this year, he was granted custody parole to attend the Budget Session of Parliament beginning January 28. (KINS)
