Heatwave to continue in J&K, Pahalgam : MeT

There is no letup in heatwave over plains of Jammu and Kashmir even as Pahalgam and Qazigund experienced the hottest day on Monday with the temperature soared to 28.6?Celsius and 34.0?C respectively breaking the previous highest record, throwing normal life out of gear, officials said.

Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the tourist spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a maximum temperature of 28.6?C today, the second highest during the last 23 years. On May 23, 2000, Pahalgam had recorded 30.8?C, it said.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway also broke the 43-year-old maximum temperature today, the first highest maximum temperature so far at 34?C. The previous highest day temperature was recorded on May 31, 1981 at 33.6?C, the MeT office said.

It said the picnic spot of Kokernag in south Kashmir also experienced the second highest maximum temperature at 31.6?C today since the last 22 years. The first highest day temperature was recorded on May 15, 2001 at 32.6?C.

Similarly Baderwah in Jammu division also had the third highest maximum temperature at 34.6?C today for the last 23 years. The second highest temperature 34.7?C was recorded on May 26, 2024 and the first highest on May 30, 2000 at 37.6?C,

The MeT office predicted that there will be “no respite in heatwave/hot & dry weather conditions over plains of Jammu and Kashmir during the next 7 days”.

There is a possibility of slight relief from heatwave/hot & dry weather conditions on May 30-31and on June 1-2 over most parts of Kashmir division and few hilly areas of Jammu division. Another spell of heatwave is very likely to occur from June 3 onwards.

Srinagar recorded the maximum temperature at 32.2?C against the normal of 26.1?C and it was 6.1?C above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.

The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara recorded the maximum temperature of 30.9?C and the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded 22.4?C on Monday.

The maximum temperature at Jammu recorded today was 42.8?C and it was 3.7?C above normal, Katra 39.0?C and it was 3.4?C above normal.
