Srinagar: National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah on Wednesday questioned the Special Investigation Team of J&K police for “rushing to the press,” when it was still investigating the Hyderpora shootout.
“If the SIT was ‘still investigating the matter,’ then what was the need to rush to the press with a statement yesterday? I don’t recall reading anywhere that yesterday’s report was an interim one,” Omar said in a tweet.
The former Chief Minister also hit back at the Jammu and Kashmir Police for warning politicians of “penal action” against ‘speculative statements’ against the SIT. He said warning people does not behove the J&K Police.
“As to the ‘threat of penal action’ criticising the report, whether interim or final is the right of any citizen and it does not behove the J&K police to be trying to threaten people into submission. If the SIT wants people to believe the report, it should report the truth, period…,” he added.
CPI(M) Central Committee Member and former member of J&K Legislative Assembly M Y Taragami also hit out at the police saying that politicians have every right to ask questions.
“Police warning of penal action is like diktat and crossing all the limits of brazen bizarre display of authoritative tendency. Political leaders have every right to ask questions. Threatening right to question is breach of law and duty the police is supposed to uphold,” Taragami tweeted.
