Iran condemns US Naval blockade, calls it 'gross violation' of sovereignty

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, on Tuesday condemned the United States over the naval blockade of Iranian ports, calling it a “gross violation” of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the president of the UN Security Council, Iravani described Washington’s move as an “illegal act of aggression” that threatens both regional and international peace.

He stressed that the blockade, announced by US Central Command on April 12, breaches Article 2, paragraph 4 of the UN Charter and constitutes “a textbook example of aggression under international law.”

“By attempting to prevent maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports, the United States is illegally interfering in the exercise of the sovereign rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran and violating the rights of third states and legitimate maritime trade,” the Ambassador wrote.

He also warned that Tehran reserves the “inherent right” to take all necessary and proportionate measures to protect its sovereignty and national interests.

Iravani urged the UN Security Council to condemn the blockade and act to prevent escalation, calling the situation a serious threat to stability in an already volatile region.

The US Navy currently maintains a significant presence in West Asia, including the deployment of aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and 11 destroyers.

However, the vessels designated for operations remain unknown, as the fleet is widely dispersed across the US Central Command area of responsibility.

The deployment follows failed talks in Pakistan over the weekend, after which President Donald Trump authorized the blockade of Iranian ports.

Tehran has also demanded compensation from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan for their role in the US-Israeli operation against Iran, a letter from the Iranian permanent representative to the UN Iravani read.

In the letter to Guterres and Bahrain, which holds the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in April, Iravani said , “In light of the foregoing, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan … Should make full reparation to the Islamic Republic of Iran, including compensation for all material and moral damage sustained as a result of their internationally wrongful acts”.

Iravani noted that in some cases, the mentioned countries were also directly involved in committing “unlawful armed attacks targeting civilian objects” in Iran.
