Japan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Motegi Toshimitsu held a telephonic conversation with India’s counterpart S Jaishankar on Friday, during which both leaders discussed the evolving situation in West Asia, with a focus on de-escalation efforts and ensuring the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The conversation began at 1:45 pm and lasted for approximately 20 minutes.
In view of the current tensions in the Middle East, Motegi expressed condolences over the casualties among Indian nationals.
He welcomed the recent announcements by the United States and Iran as a “positive development”, stressing that “de-escalation matters the most , including secure maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz , remains critical.”
Motegi further expressed hope that a final agreement would be reached swiftly through ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran, and underscored Japan’s intent to “closely coordinate with the international community, including India.”
Responding to this, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to “working closely with Japan to ensure de-escalation” in the region, including maintaining the safety of navigation through the vital shipping corridor.
Both ministers agreed to remain in close communication and also emphasised the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation to enhance the resilience of global energy and resource supply chains.
