Jammu Kashmir’s own Rout e Hilal Committee

1 min read

Jammu and Kashmir’s Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Tuesday said that Shab-e-Qadr will be observed on April 17 while as Eid moon will be sighted on April 20 and in case moon is sighted on April 20, people will have to offer Qaza fasting of a day.
The grand Mufti spoke to the media after they had a marathon meeting over the issue following the confusion on the first day of Ramdhan.
The grand Mufti had asked people to observe fast on Thursday, since they failed to sight the moon.
On the other hand, the majority of the people in Kashmir observed fast on Wednesday itself following the announcement in Pakistan of moon sighting.
Traditionally, Kashmir has been relying on Pakistan for moon sightings on the beginning of Ramdhan and on Eid. It has been for decades that the people of Kashmir would wait for the Rout e Hilal Committee, Pakistan to announce regarding the moon sighting.
Though observing Ramdhan and celebrating Eid together is a religious obligation across the world among Muslim Ummah however, the moon sighting by Pakistan in Kashmir was gradually turning political.
It was more like a political trump for Pakistan when Kashmir would obey to their announcement instead of a grand Shahi Imam of Delhi. This year, the confusion was much higher with people across the Kashmir observing fast on a call given by the Pakistan Rout e hilal committee and its clergy standing out. It brought more confusion on Thursday when the Crescent was quite visible in the skies.
Amid this din, the chairperson of waqf board Darkshan Andrabi came up with a proposal to have Kashmir’s own Rout e Hial Committee. The proposal was well received by all stakeholders. Jammu Kashmir with nearly 10 million Muslim population deserves to be equipped with its own committee and technology. It is no more a rocket science. Sighting moon is quite easier in modern technological times. Having a Rout e Hilal committee will not only help to minimize political influence of the neighboring country on these special occasions but will also bring uniformity across the Union Territory. Waqf must go ahead and set it up before the next Ramdhan arrives.
