Srinagar: Padma Shri awardee and legendary Kashmiri singer Raj Begum, who voice ruled generation of generations of Kashmiris, died here today after prolonged illness. She was 89.
The “nightingale of Kashmir” breathed her last at her daughters’ residence at Chanapora area of the Srinagar city. Begum is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Raj Begum was awarded Padma Shri in 2002 and Sangeet Akademi award in 2013. She was also bestowed with State award by Jammu and Kashmir government in 2009.
Born in Magarmal Bagh areas of Srinagar, the “melody queen” of Kashmir had been singing when she was a child. Raj Begum started off as a wedding singer; her scintillating voice gradually made her to rise and rise.
And she rose to become one of Kashmir’s most powerful, treasured female voices when Radio Kashmir Srinagar started post 1947; they would frequently broadcast her stellar compositions. (PTK)
